Revisions and Exploration

I took the morning at CDI to revise the program, inventory, and questionnaire. Using this time to further develop these documents enhanced their overall value.

The afternoon was used to explore the city of Winston-Salem and capture inspirational images to influence our designs and design process. We ventured down fourth street passing many restaurants, offices, and parking garages. In addition to this adventure, we also visited Contempo, a modern high end residential italian furniture supplier.
The day was wrapped up with an informal meeting with Nick and Carol, along with a few other interns. We discussed our precedents and direction of the projects. Nick concluded the meeting with a brief presentation about the importance of engaging the senses in presentations by utilizing movement, sound, and scents.

Programming, Inventory, & Questionnaire

The majority of the day was spent documenting the space. My IPD team and I began by identifying all equipment, furnishings, and fixtures present in the space. This was documented using an excel spreadsheet, which worked well to organize the information.

In addition to the inventory, a program document was developed to further explain and document the space. The program included such areas as design questions, existing conditions, spatial needs, precedents, concepts, and references.

In an effort to provide a thorough analysis of existing space and understanding of expectations of its users, a questionnaire was drafted. The questionnaire contains the following questions:

What challenges are presented with the storage of materials in the lounge area?
What activities does the lounge area accommodate?
What storage needs are met by the current space?
What storage needs are not met by the current space?
What adjectives would you use to describe the existing lounge space?
What adjectives would you use to describe the imagined future lounge space?
What color preferences do you have for the future lounge space and furniture within?
What activities should the future lounge space and furniture accommodate?
What items will be displayed in this space?
What do you consider to be the boundaries of the lounge area? Explain.
Using a few words describe the atmosphere you anticipate the new space and furniture encompassing.

Opening Luncheon

Today marked the start of my design internship with the Center for Design Innovation, CDI. We discussed plans over a much appreciated Panera Boxed lunch. Topics included such technologies as rapid prototyping and motion picture capture.

For my internship I will be taking on the responsibility of designing a series of multi-use/despecialized tables to be used in combination with seating elements and storage elements in the lounge area of CDI's office. The design challenge will be exciting to tackle and will begin with a precendent and program analysis, combining both aesthetic and functional needs of the current users and future users. A questionnaire will be formulated to better understand the needs of the space that are not obvious in looking at its existing state.

Other project needs were presented such as lighting in the lounge space and room darkening elements in the projection area. Important elements of this internship will involve organization of files and scheduling, which will be examined over the next few says and flexible throughout the summer.
